چکیده

We make a proposal for a Gedanken experiment, based on the Aharonov-Bohm effect, how to measure in principle the zig-zagness of the trajectory of propagation (abberation from its classical trajectory) of a massive particle in quantum mechanics. Experiment I is conceived to show that contributions from quantum paths abberating from the classical trajectory are directly observable. Experiment II is conceived to measure average length, scaling behavior and critical exponent (Hausdorff dimension) of quantum mechanical paths. PACS index: 03.65.Bz

Generalized Aharonov-Bohm Effect, Homotopy Classes and Hausdorff Dimension

We suggest as gedanken experiment a generalization of the Aharonov-Bohm experiment, based on an array of solenoids. This experiment allows in principle to measure the decomposition into homotopy classes of the quantum mechanical propagator. This yields information on the geometry of the average path of propagation and allows to determine its Hausdorff dimension. PACS index: 03.65.Bz

Fr{'e}chet and Hausdorff Queries on $x$-Monotone Trajectories

vspace{0.2cm}In this paper, we design a data structure for the following problem. Let $pi$ be an $x$-monotone trajectory with $n$ vertices in the plane and $epsilon >0$. We show how to preprocess $pi$ and $epsilon$ into a data structure such that for any horizontal query segment $Q$ in the plane, one can quickly determine the minimal continuous fraction of $pi$ whose Fr{'e}chet and Hausdo...

How to Measure the Fractal Geometry of the Relativistic Fermion Propagator

We study the geometry of propagation of relativistic fermions. We propose how to measure its quantum mechanical length. Numerical lattice results for the free propagator of DiracWilson fermions yield Hausdorff dimension dH = 2 for the unit-matrix component and dH = 1 for any γ-matrix component. A possible generalization when matter interacts with radiation is discussed. PACS index: 03.65.-w, 05...

Dimension of space–time

In order to make it operationally accessible, it is proposed to base the notion of the dimension of space–time on measure–theoretic concepts, thus admitting the possibility of noninteger dimensions. It is found then, that the Hausdorff covering procedure is operationally unrealizeable because of the inherent finite space–time resolution of any real experiment. We therefore propose to define an ...

Measuring the Hausdorff Dimension of Quantum Mechanical Paths

We measure the propagator length in imaginary time quantum mechanics by Monte Carlo simulation on a lattice and extract the Hausdorff dimension dH . We find that all local potentials fall into the same universality class giving dH = 2 like the free motion. A velocity dependent action (S ∝ ∫ dt | ~v |α) in the path integral (e.g. electrons moving in solids, or Brueckner’s theory of nuclear matte...
